5:00 am
lights. >> that's what i'm talking about. monday feel good. >> an early gift for you jon kelley on this monday, november 4th, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning. new this morning the investigation continues into an overnight crash that kill as man who was crossing a busy street in a wheelchair. this happened around midnight near market street and octavia in the hays valley neighborhood. christie smith is live in san francisco at that intersection. christie, this area has seen problems before. >> reporter: it has. good morning to you. and this man was actually in the crosswalk trying to cross here heading eastbound down market street when he was hit. you can see the intersection there. and if steve can pan over there is orange marking where the wheelchair stopped.
5:01 am
this man was taken to sf general hospital where he died. a young man in his 20s. his wheelchair was actually had to be lifted up by a number of officers and taken away. the driver did stop, did cooperate with police but did not want to speak with us this morning. we're told there was at least one witness to this accident. we can tell you that he wore a security guard's uniform so he stood out at the scene. this happened some time after midnight. exactly how the collision occurred, that's under investigation. but this is octavia and market street, very dangerous intersection. the most injury-related collisions in sf in 2011 happened right here. investigators describe to us the disturbing scene they saw when they arrived. >> when officers arrived they found a wheelchair, several feet up the on ramp of the freeway and the victim was outside his wheelchair.
5:02 am
>> reporter: on friday the city turned on a new photo enforcement system that the same intersection because there have been so many serious collisions involving cars, making that illegal right turn from market street on south bound 101, they also added a number of concrete barriers and signs reminding drivers and pedestrians to be careful. for now, though, drivers who do this, make the illegal right turn, get a warning, then december 1 that fine goes up to $238. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:02. this morning we're learning more about the 23-year-old gunman who opened fire inside los angeles international airport almost three days ago, killing a tsa officer and wounding three others. marla tellez is live in the newsroom with an update on the investigation that could take some time now to complete. good morning. >> the reason being is that 23-year-old paul ciancia is
5:03 am
still in critical condition this morning. officials say he was shot in the face a few times so he is unable to speak to authorities. ciancia did communicate that he acted alone on friday morning. right now here is a live look at l.a.x. where those pillars are all lit up in blue. this is in honor of 39-year-old gerardo hernandez t officer allegedly shot and killed. new video from our nbc station in los angeles shows the apartment complex where ciancia lived with at least one roommate. it was 35 miles north of l.a.x., neighbors say they were startled when dozens of fbi agents and police officers showed up to this quiet complex on friday. they also gave insight about what they knew about ciancia. >> i thought almost like 30, 40 police, almost 50 f. they walked close to our house.
5:04 am
i wasn't sure and i was scared to ask what they want. >> you never see him. you see the two other but never see him on a regular basis. if at all. unless he stayed put in the apartment. >> officials say a friend dropped off ciancia at l.a.x. but they don't believe that friend knew his intentions or the fact he was heavily armed with an assault rifle, high capacity magazines, a bag of ammunition and handwritten manifesto that makes it clear he was determined to kill multiple tsa employees. in addition to hernandez two other agents were shot. they have been released from the shopt that's good news. a local high school teacher you see here, he was also shot. he is hospitalized but he is doing well, all things considered. coming up i'm going to talk more about the manifesto found in ciancia's duffle bag. he names a former government official in the letter that he apparently doesn't like. i'll tell you who that is coming
5:05 am
up. >> such a busy day on friday. >> let's check in on the weather. 5:05. christina loren is telling us a crisp start. starting to feel like fall. >> it is. i love driving around the bay area. you have beautiful leaves changing colors still. 39 degrees is a cold start to the morning. that is the temperature now in fairfield. napa about 32 degrees, you've increased by 2 degrees so i can tell you right now as we head throughout the morning hours it's going to be a cold start. we have a nice rebound but winds will play a factor again. especially through the north bay valleys and the santa cruz mountains. keep that in mind driving around the bay area you have a high-profile vehicle. 73 in livermore, 69 in fremont, 70 in san jose and 68 degrees in san francisco as momsed. i'll let you know when we get
5:06 am
our next chance for rain. let's check on your drive and say good morning to mike inouye. >> good morning. we're looking to the bay bridge toll plaza. not a lot happening. we'll show you the rest of the bay and give you the overview as we get started. nothing really unexpected for the speed sensors. the update we talked about earlier, i want to make sure everyone heard that all of the lanes are cleared, north 101 toward cochran, bailey. no more slowing either direction. much better news into the south bay from farther south. to the try valley as well. starting to build but no surprises. typical there. live look outside we'll show you how things are for the north bay. we see a good number of cars. might notice a few on the road earlier because we did do that hour change. we rolled the clocks back for those who didn't do it you probably have been an hour off
5:07 am
all day. >> always helping us on many fronts. a san francisco man charged with throwing a hammer at a b.a.r.t. worker. vincent has pleaded not guilty to felony charges related to the october 21 attack, that is an unusual mug shot. prosecutors say he hurled that hammer at striking workers missing them by about 15 feet. it happened outside the daily city station on the last day of the labor strike. he was arrested and reportedly found with a straight pick in his pocket. he remains in custody on 25,000 bail. b.a.r.t. workers approving that temporary deal that not only ends last month's strike but also should mean no more strike for several years. the dreeving includes a raise. it also requires workers to pay into their pensions and
5:08 am
increases health care cost. another key here, the contract contains a no strike clause until 2017. it now goes to b.a.r.t.'s board of directors for final approval. >> the bay area's two major league baseball teams could soon be sharing a stadium. instead of the a's playing at o.co, there is talk the american league west champs might host their home games at at&t park. bob is live outside the park with the latest for us. good morning. >> good morning. this unusual arrangement that the giants sharing at&t park with the oakland a's would be temporary. only about two years. and if it did happen would be starting next season in 2014. this is according to the "san francisco chronicle." at issue the a's lease with the coliseum. the lease is up and the team has not been able to come to agreement with the oakland coliseum commission. the commission wants the control over the concessions that the
5:09 am
team now has and would like a several year lease while the team wants two in anticipation of a move in the future. why would the giants want to share with the a's? this is something that major league baseball is pushing for. once the a's move, there is almost no moving back to oakland unless the new stadium were to be built which right now seems unlikely. a move to the south bay is looking unlikely since major league baseball is blocking a move. therefore, if the a's move to at&t park for two years this would almosts for them to eventually move out of the bay area, leaving this market all to the giants. there's a couple complications of two teams sharing the same stadium. that is when both teams have a home game on the same day. that does happen nine times next season. >> a lot of work ahead.
5:10 am
